We believe that all filmmakers should enlist
an experienced entertainment attorney long before they raise
money or commence pre-production. In today's litigious society,
it is simply too risky to proceed any other way.
An attorney is needed for at least two things:
- To draft contracts and releases for actors, crew, locations,
etc. and
- To form a legal structure that protects your personal
assets and those of your investors from any legal damages
that result from your production.
As to the legal structure, we recommend forming a Limited
Partnership with a Corporation as the managing partner. This
protects your investors, who are Limited Partners, and you,
who act as the managing partner through your corporation.
The problem, of course, is that many indie filmmakers can't
afford legal services. We've tried to fix that problem, by
negotiating substantial discounts on legal packages that get
you all the way from raising money to finishing your film.
To learn details about what these packages provide, and their
costs, click here. Note
that we currently have arrangements only for California-based
films, though we hope to expand to other states soon.
We have also arranged a free, half-hour of legal consultation
for any of our seminar or webinar participants (webinar participants
must take all 8 courses), and a discounted hourly rate with
an experienced entertainment attorney. To receive the free
consultation or discounted rate, please email
us.
